This month our One Book Lane book club read and reviewed Rene Denfeld’s powerful and haunting novel set on death row, The Enchanted. Here’s what they made of it . . .
‘A dark and haunting novel about a prisoner held on death row in a prison with violent inmates and corrupt prison guards. The novel combines descriptions of harsh prison life with some beautiful imaginative escapism.’
‘A chilling and compelling read. . . some of the events detailed are quite disturbing, however I found it very thought provoking and it is a book which will have an impact on me for some time.’
‘Enthralling and thrilling. It was intriguing from the very first page. Loved the twist at the end, a really well written book.’
‘I would recommend this book to others as it was simply a very different read, a break away from the norm.’
‘Fascinating book which was hard to put down, it was unlike any style I had read before and at times I found the style of writing confusing but I was compelled to keep reading.’
‘It took me a while to get into it but once I was there it was difficult to put down and when I had to was planning when I would next get to read it’
‘A compelling read. A fascinating social comment on the horrific consequences that can result from the lack of genuine love and affection in a persons life.’
‘Both sad and hopeful . . . I cannot say that I enjoyed reading it in the traditional sense but I am glad I read it, the story will stay with me a long time.’
‘I absolutely loved this book. . . it reminds me of Stoner by John Williams . . . The narration is strangely mesmerizing’
‘A stunning read. I felt compelled to read it to the end despite the often horrific situations described . . . unlike anything else I have read . . . I do recommend this book but perhaps not suitable for a holiday read!
